As a University Institute, the aim of the Fundació Institut Guttmann is to contribute to the specialist training of health professionals linked to the world of neurorehabilitation, allowing them direct, rigorous and practical access to major diagnostic, technological and therapeutic advances in this clinical specialism. The transfer of knowledge and quality training in the field of Neurorehabilitation, Neuropsychological Rehabilitation and Neuroengineering stands out.

The teaching offer of the Institut Guttmann University Institute includes:

  • Fellowship programmes
  • Practical training of resident physicians and other related disciplines

The University Institute is governed by an Internal Academic Quality System, accredited by the Agencia de Qualitat Universitària AQU of the Generalitat de Catalunya. This agency forms a structure for all training and academic processes based on the AUDIT programme of the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation, and on the recommendations of the European Association for Quality Assurance(ENQA), with the aim of always guaranteeing quality, multidisciplinary teaching activity that prepares students to become the best professionals who can improve the quality of life of neurological patients in the future.

2022 was characterised by deep remodelling work on the official master’s degree that we teach as a centre attached to the Autonomous University of Barcelona.

  • The suspension of the Master’s Degree in Neurorehabilitation has been requested in order to work on modifications and have them approved for the 23-24 academic year. The idea behind this work is for the master’s degree to maintain its official status and number of credits, but with a redistribution of the modules that significantly prioritises the internship hours.
  • The 2022-2023 University Master’s Degree in Neuropsychological Rehabilitation and Cognitive Stimulation has been maintained, but a modification process is planned for 2023-2024, with the intention of becoming a Permanent Training Title with a very significant increase in internship hours.
  • Regarding the Interuniversity Master’s Degree in Neuroengineering and Rehabilitation, which we teach alongside the Polytechnic University of Catalonia and the UAB, the third year began in mid-September in a completely face-to-face format in terms of the modules that we coordinate from the Institut Guttmann. Regarding internships and final master’s projects, during the first term of 2022 the tutoring of 3 final master’s projects and 2 internship students from the 20-21 academic year was completed; in the second term we started tutoring another 4 students, all with an engineering profile and belonging to the 21-22 academic year of the course. They will carry out both their curricular internship and their TFM with us.

DATA ON REGULATED TEACHING ACTIVITY

The following teaching activities took place in 2022:

  • Master’s Degree in Neurorehabilitation (60 ECTS). In total 19 students from the 2021-2022 course have graduated, and 1 student from the 2020-2021 course.
  • Master’s Degree in Neuropsychological Rehabilitation and Cognitive Stimulation (60 ECTS). 19 students from the 2021-2022 course have graduated, and 17 new students have registered on the 2022-2023 course.
  • Master’s Degree in Neuroengineering and Rehabilitation (90 ECTS). In total 22 students have registered for the third Interuniversity Master’s course.
  • Postgraduate courses (accredited by the UAB). 49 students have registered this year.
  • Neurorehabilitation Expert Programme. Three fellows were incorporated at the start of October 2022 to perform the specialties of Spinal Cord Injury, Brain Injury and the Neuropsychological Rehabilitation of Brain Injury.
  • Regarding the practical training linked to the residency programmes, in 2022 we helped to train a total of 24 resident physicians: 21 in the specialism of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, 1 in the specialism of Orthopaedic Surgery and Traumatology and 2 in the specialism of Neurology. The origin of the residents was: 7 from Catalonia, 8 from the rest of Spain and 9 from other countries.

Contribution to Practical Training

In addition to the training of the 24 resident physicians within the aforementioned residency programme, this year we have helped to train 114 professionals from different clinical disciplines as shown in the following table:

In 2022, the Institut Guttmann signed a collaboration framework agreement with the University of Girona to promote our scientific and technological relations and the development of training activities with its Faculties of Medicine, Nursing, Education and Psychology, Polytechnic School, and Health and Sports.

In 2022 we also signed an educational cooperation agreement with the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Barcelona for the development of external academic internships for students of its Master’s in General Health Psychology.

With the support of the FC Barcelona Foundation, a project has been signed to carry out a Mechanics and Postural Alignment course aimed at Paediatric Dentists from the HM Hospital de Niños de Barcelona and taught by professionals from the Institut Guttmann in December.

SANTI BESO ARNALOT DOCUMENTATION CENTRE

The Santi Beso Arnalot Documentation Centre has continued to provide services to professionals and students interested in specific information and literature, consulting our document collection and databases, finding articles, Internet access, etc.

Throughout 2022, we served 685 users (238 in person and 447 online). The total number of in-person visits was 2,200. Requests were made for a total of 2,644 articles.

The Santi Beso Arnalot Documentation Centre is continuing to digitise its bibliographic collection on paper, and students’ final master’s theses, doctoral theses and articles by our professionals and summaries of magazines subscribed to, among others, are constantly updated on the SiiDON portal.
