Suport a pacients i famílies

From the Social Work Area weekly meetings, informative sessions and interactive, educational and informative working groups are organized where the participation of family members. The main objective of the interventions of the Social Work area are to accompany and support patients, their families or close relational circle, to promote the appropriate use of both their personal resources (empowerment, ability to react, to organize and face problems), such as environmental-familial ones (of the own family group and natural networks), as well as enjoy a knowledge and precise use of the social community resources of their territory (services, equipment and benefits).

The biopsychosocial care model that characterizes the functional dynamics of our hospital, makes it clear that “Neurorehabilitation must take into account both the physical, psychological, and social and cultural aspects that affect the patient’s personality, his stage evolution, their way of life… Developing in each case care strategies centered on the patient and their family group”.

Among the activities carried out by the Social Work Area of the Institut Guttmann, we highlight two education and support programs for patients and families: Cuidador Expert (the Expert Caregiver) and Punt de trobada (the Meeting Point).

Cuidador expert (the Expert Caregiver)

Born with the support of those responsible for the Prevention and Chronic Care Program of Catalonia (PPAC), and the General Directorate of Health Planning of the Department of Health of the Generalitat of Catalonia, it has resumed during 2022 after being stopped by the pandemic. This program is aimed at family members of patients with brain damage acquired.

The Institut Guttmann is the only center in Spain where this program is carried out for the profile of patients and families with brain damage.

During October and November 2022, we carried out the 5th edition of the Brain Injury Expert Caregiver Program. A total of 10 family members have participated in this edition.

  • Of the caregivers participating in the program, 80% are women and 20% are men.
  • According to the family bond, the most numerous group of caregivers is the mother or father, and the next is the partner.
  • Regarding the employment situation, most of the participants are not currently working.

In order to evaluate and measure the results of the program, a series of scales and questionnaires have been given to the participants, whith the following conclusions:

  • Self-efficacy: There is no significant change, it increases by one point after participating in the program, the average results are 27.5 at the beginning and 28.5 at the end of the program.
  • On average, the self-perception of the health status of participating caregivers improves.
  • All the participants affirm that they felt at ease with their group mates.
  • 100% of family members felt very or quite comfortable talking about their situation in front of other people.
  • All the participants considered that the explanations were quite or very clear.
  • In general, family members are very satisfied with their participation in the group.

It is defined as an Expert Caregiver, the person who cares for another with a chronic illness with complex care needs and who is able to take responsibility and take care of them, acquiring skills that help manage the physical, emotional and social impact of caring, thus improving their quality of life and that of the person they care for.

Punt de trobada (the Meeting Point)

The “Meeting point” program is a space that is facilitated between the center’s professionals and patients and their families, based on training and interactive sessions, where topics of interest regarding disability in different spheres (biological , psychological, social).

The main objective is empowerment based on the provision of information and feedback spaces with reference professionals, complementing the individual and family intervention itself that is already carried out during the hospital stay, and working towards the enhancement of patient autonomy, as well as involving families, conveying the importance of being proactive in the search for information, education and learning.

During this year 2022, 37 sessions were held in which a total of 200 people participated. The themes proposed in previous years have been maintained, giving continuity to the essence of the program and to the professionals most linked to it. It has been the professionals themselves, partly encouraged by the coordination, who have proposed new topics considered to be of interest to families and patients.

Accommodation program

Intended to ensure that family members, displaced from their home to be carers, find a home away from home. In 2022 we signed an agreement with the Jubert Figueres Foundation for which a total of 45 requests for accommodation have been made and, as a result, 32 families have been accommodated at the resources of this foundation.
